CLIMATOLOGY - Glaciations linked to the Earth's orbit?
We have already talked here about the fact that the planets are either moving away from or approaching the sun to reach their orbit of stability. This also influenced their intrinsic speed and direction of rotation.
But what has just been highlighted, still by the same working group, is that this movement can go as far as an alternation of rapprochement – distance from the sun (slight variations around the equilibrium orbit decreasing over time).
And - here is the novelty and the importance - this phenomenon is, for the Earth, at the origin of the glacial and interglacial periods!
Until now, there was no real explanation for these terrestrial climatic periods. It seemed that indeed, they were linked to modifications of the earth's orbit, since the work of Milankovitch and his cycles but above all to the eccentricity, the obliquity, the precession of the equinoxes of the orbit without any more reasons to these variations.
Thus, it seems that, thanks to this contribution, the astronomical theory of paleoclimates makes a significant leap because it then applies to all the planets: Mars and Venus would therefore be concerned... And cyclostatigraphy (study of these cycles) too.
The Earth is moving away from the sun so we would be heading towards an ice age but we should not count on this to compensate for current global warming due to human behavior...
